Short description

Our chatbot talks about the rising problem of marine pollution and the importance of protecting marine species.

Chat diagram

Define the problem

People are uneducated about water pollution and marine species protection. They don't understand how important these issues are. The general disinterest in the protection of some species (sharks for instance) can be very damaging because people can't see the bigger picture. General thinking about immediate profit instead of long-run thinking is what causes many problems, this one included.

Which groups of people are affected by this problem?

All people are affected by it. With more serious marine pollution, seafood could no longer be safe to eat or the marine ecosystem could break leading to the extinction of many edible fish species. This could destroy nations and communities who depend on fishing and the ocean. Our children and their children will already start to feel the effects of this issue which the majority of people are choosing to ignore.

Who is responsible for this problem?

People who don't care about the environment and giant companies who dump their junk in the ocean. While to pollution itself is not the fault of an average person, the fact that this continues happening and no changes are on the horizon is something we all are at fault.

How big is the problem?

Since the oceans surround all continents it is obvious that this is a world problem. Micorplastics are everywhere and we even found plastic bags in the Mariana Trench, this issue is at its heighest now.

What is blocking the current solution of the problem?

People leading the biggest countries and companies capable of helping. These people put money in front of morale. They don't wish for anything to change because they make profit from it. As long as these people have the world's resources, nothing will change.

Why did you choose this problem, and why is it important to solve it?

Since we live by the sea, we are more insterested in saving it. Even here in our small community, the effect of sea pollution are everywhere. There is less and less fish and our sea is becoming a breeding ground for invasive species. The sea is important to millions of people because of food and tourism, but simply moral reasoning should be more than enough for us to stop this.

How does the chatbot solve this problem?

It educates people about this very urgent matter, but it is a barely visible, unimportant piece of the puzzle. There are so many world issues that we couldn't cover in this chatbot so we hope that it will at least encourage other people to do their own research and to educate themselves.
