Define the problem

The global waste management crisis due to overuse of resources is a huge problem today. Air, soil and water pollution have now taken on large proportions. Environmental pollution causes major problems, not only for humans but also for animals. Because of that, many lives are endangered. Excessive urbanization has made it increasingly difficult to control and manage waste. Excessive consumption of raw materials greatly reduces the quality of life. The problem of overcrowding of the Earth with waste is not only an environmental problem but also an economic loss. Recycling would reduce waste disposal costs, and raw materials obtained by recycling would lower the cost of production. Nowadays, we must not allow inappropriate waste disposal to destroy our natural beauties, chemical waste to pollute our waters, and harmful gases from burning garbage to pollute our air. These are global problems that must be kept to a minimum in the modern world. Just realizing that a problem exists is a step towards a brighter future. If we only became aware and understood the importance of this problem, we would see how much we as an individuals can do on this issue and improve the situation in the world. Waste is not garbage and we must not treat it that way.

Which groups of people are affected by this problem?

The problem of overcrowding of the Earth concerns all of us, even people in countries with a smaller population where the problem is not that critical. If we do not stop polluting the environment, the consequences will catch up with us very quickly. We need nature more than she needs us and we should act accordingly. It is on us to to resolve this situation in order to enable a better life for us and future generations.

Who is responsible for this problem?

All people who produce waste and do not dispose of it properly are responsible for this important global problem. A major role in solving this problem should be played by state authorities, whose obligation is to raise awareness and force people to dispose of waste more responsibly. Large global companies whose interest is not proper waste management but personal interest are also responsible, but so is any individual who does not spread knowledge and awareness about recycling.

How big is the problem?

The problem of irresponsible waste management has spread to all parts of the world, even to uninhabited areas. People today leave waste everywhere, not thinking about the consequences. The fact that this problem is almost impossible to eradicate completely speaks to its size and importance.

What is blocking the current solution of the problem?

Irresponsibility of citizens, lack of knowledge and inexperience of this big global problem stand in the way of a healthier and more beautiful place to live. Excessive urbanization, population and urban growth make it difficult to solve this problem.

Why did you choose this problem, and why is it important to solve it?

We consider the problem of insufficient waste recycling to be an extremely big problem that affects every inhabitant of this planet. We don’t even have to say how important it is to have clean, fresh air, unpolluted, drinking water available every day. Whether this will be available to us in the future depends on ourselves and our behavior today. People nowadays do not take pollution seriously enough and do not consider it a big problem which only confirms to us how important is to be educated about recycling. With knowledge we can change the world we live in. We chose this problem because we believe that we need to introduce people to the rules of waste management and show them how to improve their lifestyle. We can prove that small daily changes in habits can change the world and quality of life.

How does the chatbot solve this problem?

The chatbot we designed includes several options for solving the problem of planet pollution. We included mostly educational content in the chatbot because we believe that only with knowledge we can improve the current state of recycling. Also, in the fun part, along the quiz, we have included tips that every responsible citizen should use in an attempt to create better habits. Another important thing was to guide people on the right path, literally speaking. We have achieved this by introducing the necessary locations for recycling yards. This makes it much easier for citizens because we save their time. In addition, we have introduced some ways to support recycling. We have listed a couple of major organizations and companies that encourage recycling in any way. It is important to support them and give them courage to not give up because they must be and are an example to all of us!
