Define the problem

Huge amount of requests for help after of a certain catastrophe (war in the Ukraine, earthquakes in Petrinja ...) cause a crisis and overcrowding of the association Dobro Dobrim (DoDo) which wants to help all those in need. Because talking to each person takes too much time individually, the association loses efficiency and it becomes very difficult to provide all users with equally good and quality service. Furthermore, the traditional process of finding volunteers and donors also requires a lot of time and additional workers which then have to deal with communication, instead of working to improve the work of the association and its actions.

Which groups of people are affected by this problem?

This problem affects all ages and all groups of people affected by the mentioned natural disasters or other current problems in Croatia or worldwide. It also affects people who want to help, want to volunteer or donate, but have a problem with the communication. Therefore, all users of the association and people who depend on the help provided by their work suffer here:

  • All victims of aggression caused by the war in the Ukraine
  • Families whose property was damaged / destroyed due to earthquakes in Petrinja and the surrounding area
  • All families living at the risk of poverty and social exclusion
  • Volunteers and all who are willing to donate or help the association in some other way

Who is responsible for this problem?

We can say that this problem is primarily caused by sudden disasters that affect a large number of people and no one can predict them. Moreover, there is not enough manpower in the association to deal with communication and at the same time with organization of actions, supplies of necessities, provision of accommodation, etc.

How big is the problem?

As an example, let's take just one of DoDo's actions: humanitarian aid to Ukraine. It is believed that there are currently about 17,300 refugees from Ukraine in Croatia. The DoDo Association collects all funds and supplies for victims of aggression and refugees who report that they need help and send this information to the Embassy of Ukraine. So, there is a huge need for help and that is why the problem is quite big.

What is blocking the current solution of the problem?

The problem would be solved by a larger number of volunteers who would do their job systematically, responding to all inquiries and requests from the public. But, unfortunately, it is not so easy to find so many people who are ready to do so much work with dedication voluntary.

Why did you choose this problem, and why is it important to solve it?

We chose this problem because we believe that the association Dobro Dobrim is doing extremely useful projects and organizing humanitarian aids that help a large number of people and their actions encourage others to show solidarity, which we consider extremely important in today's society. In order for this association to continue to maintain its efficiency regardless of the number of beneficiaries who need help, it is necessary to address the issue of communication with people who offer help and people who need help.

How does the chatbot solve this problem?

We solve the problem of communication between the association and its users. Our chatbot systematizes user responses, provides the association with a transparent view of all requests, and answers frequently asked questions that association members would otherwise have to answer. We systematically send 3 types of requests to the association: information on who needs help, who offers help and who wants to suggest a new humanitarian aid. That is how we relieve the association and enable volunteers and its members to dedicate themselves to the actions and other activities of the association rather then to communication.
